Sounding out and blending words can be so much fun!

Fitness & phonics all in one!
The hoops were like sound buttons. We loved saying the sound next to the hoop as we jumped. Then as we jumped out of the last hoop, we had to blend all the sounds we had said to figure out the word.

Sound of the week /th/

Don't get tricked!

When we make the hard /th/ sound and the soft airy /th/ sound our tongue pokes out. We know not to get tricked by /f/! When we say /f/ our tongue stays inside our mouth and our top teeth are on our bottom lip. We made mouths with tongues that can be kept in and hidden or poked out to say /th/.

A book with /th/ in the back and a cloth

We made a bubble bath with words we found in our reading books and around the classroom. We did this as an independent activity as we found them over the day.

Before writing a word on a bubble, the person who found it had to decide which sound the /th/ made. The dark blue bubbles say the hard (voiced) /th/ sound and the light blue bubbles say the soft (unvoiced) /th/ sound.

As you can see the bath is overflowing. /th/ is very popular in words.

July's Calendar Challenge

                   Humpback Whale
Sera told us in her Calendar Challenge that humpback whales grow between 12 and 16 metres, so we thought we would measure 16m to see how long that really is.

We estimated how long 16m is.

We measured 16m with metre rulers. Sebastian is standing on zero. After that each of us represents one metre. We couldn't believe how long a humpback whale can get when we looked at the photo! A humpback whale grows to over half a netball court!

Sound of the Week: Short /o/, and The Three Sounds of ED

WHAT IS THE /w/, /o/ RULE YOU MAY ASK?
When you hear an /o/ after a /w/ the /o/ sound is written with an A, like in waddle. We waddled in our duck feet.
We wrote words with a /w/ sound then an /o/ sound after it like; waddle, was, what, wasp and want to name a few.

Speaking of which, waddled also has our focus chunky monkey work ending.

TIME TRAVELLER ED
ED is a time traveler. He takes verbs into the past!
-ing is happening now and -ed happened in the past

The 3 Sounds of ED
We have clever tricks to work out if he says 'id', 't' or 'd'.

Genesis 1:31

Here's a little something to help us learn our memory verse this week. It is the perfect last word on an awesome term of marveling God's creation.

Policeman E

Protector ck ...Caylee (c) and Ella (k) work together to protect the vowel from the creature! The vowel says its short sound. We call it, it's weak sound.

Policeman E (Sian) jumps over Protector ck and says the vowel, "Oi you! Say your full name." The vowel (Isabella-Hope says its letter name. "A"

Because the vowel says it's strong sound, it doesn't need protecting now, so Protector ck isn't needed anymore. The /k/ sound is just written with a K. C walks away.

Now the word is bake and Policeman E is super silent!

It's fun to play with sounds!

May Calendar Challenge

Congratulations entrants!
Our May calendar animal was in fact a plains zebra. They live in East and Southern Africa.

Below are Johan and Sian's entries. They were away on show day.

We had a special guest attend our Calendar Challenge show today, Sarah from D3. She was (and still is) a pro at Calendar Challenges. We loved her creativity and the experience that she brought to our show. She is so clever to have figured out how to make her entry a puppet show!

Inside the box... Sarah's secrets revealed!
