Maths Challenge - Odd and Even Investigation

Our class challenge in Maths this week is to work out a trick by noticing patterns. 

The Challenge: What is the trick to knowing if a number is odd or even without having to always work it out?

So far the things people have noticed are...

• A way of testing if a number is EVEN is to share it between two groups. If each group has the same amount it is even. We say they have an even amount.

For example, 

If you go to the lolly shop and you and your friend share the lollies...One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me, etc, etc and you each have the same amount of lollies once you have shared them all out, you bought an even number of lollies and you are both happy. Someone is going to be disappointed if you bought an odd number because someone will get more and the other will have less. 

QUESTION FOLKS: How many more does one person have when the number is odd? Is it always the same difference???????

• " Two odd numbers make an even number because 3+3=6 and 5+5=10 but I also know 4+4=8 and four is an even number." Tristan
• Samuel worked out 6+6=12, so he said, "two even numbers make an even number".

UPDATE
It looks like a bomb exploded on our whiteboard, but here are our accumulated thoughts. We added to our brainstorm over the week. A storm it was! Our learning and understanding grew and we bounced off each others light bulb moments. Remember you can make the photo bigger by clicking on it :)
 

Even though our focus on odd and even numbers is over we are continuing to notice patterns with odd and even numbers.

Recycling Centre Visit (Reduce, Reuse, RECYCLE)

We're off! On the bus... exciting!

Our recycling goes all over the world to be made into new things.

That mound you can see out the window is the old landfill covered over. The Recycling Centre site used to be a landfill for 57 years.

Safety glasses... check! High vis vests... check! Covered shoes... check! We are safe to go inside the Recycling Centre...

This is the landfill pile. Sometimes people put things in their recycling that cannot be recycled :(

Soooooo much rubbish!!! ...and this is just the Manawatu's! Pretty eye opening.

Outside the milk bottles are squashed and put in bales for shipping.

Imagine if our City Council did not have a way of managing our rubbish. Our houses might start to look like this! Rubbish is hard to keep tidy. The wild wind will whistle and blow wherever it pleases. Not very safe and healthy for us or God's animals. We really need to be good caretakers of God's beautiful world!

LITTERLESS LUNCH BOX (REDUCE, Reuse, Recycle)

Our theme topic this term is:

'CARETAKERS OF GOD'S WORLD'

We are learning how to be good caretakers of God's beautiful creation. We're not just leaving it to the adults! God gave the job to everyone.

Mrs Goodall from Zerowaste came to talk to us about rubbish; what it is, where it goes and how to REDUCE it. We especially learnt how to reduce rubbish in our lunch boxes. She came over two sessions.

In the first session we counted how many pieces of rubbish we were sending to the landfill (aka into God's soil) from our lunch boxes. We also looked at what we could RECYCLE or REUSE.

In session two we talked about better packaging choices, while still eating around-about the same things. Here are some photo's of session two...
















Mrs Goodall gave us some awesome information. Here she is showing us the landfill options.

Mrs Goodall showed us how we can create less rubbish while still having our chippie treat. She suggested buying a big packet of chips instead of the small ones and to put a few in a plastic container.

We worked in groups to test our knowledge and see if we could sort lunch options into litterless or landfill.

It's Policeman e, watch out vowels!

Policeman e

Policeman e is a rather bossy fellow. He likes to hang around at the end of words. He jumps over the consonant and says to the vowel, 

“Oi you, say your full name!”. The vowel does what they are told. Then Policeman e says nothing more.

In ‘not’ O says its nickname.
