CONTRACTION SURGERY

Safety warning: Do try this at home.

Today we performed contraction surgery. There were some close calls but most operations were successful without any complications or fatalities.

We were happy to see our old friend APOSTROPHE this week. We learnt about him last term when he was being pretty possessive!

This week we looked at his other job - stealing letters and gobbling them up! He goes where he's gobbled aka 'the cut'.

We've learnt that a contraction and its original two words, for example, 'I am' and 'I'm', are like a worm. They're the same worm, they mean the same thing, but one form is the extended worm and the other is the worm contracted. Like when a worm moves... extend, contract, extend, contract. Same worm, different forms.

Getting into our scrubs...

Ready for the operating theatre, surgical scissors and band aides in hand. A test run on "that is". These doctors look a little intense!

Time to operate...

The surgeon's added an apostrophe up the top on the cut and... a great job done doctors!

GOD OF NATIONS

We are learning about how God is God of Nations this term.
We were pretty stoked to find out our very own national anthem starts with this very statement and then goes on to basically tell God he's awesome and that we want him in our lives and in our country... can't get better than that!
We were so excited by this, the class begged Mrs Forrest to put it on the blog so we can watch it again and again!

READING ROCKS!

WE ARE TOTALLY INTO READING RIGHT NOW!

Couldn't resist taking this sneaky snap when I spotted a few early finishers making the choice to silent read. They could have chosen a number of other options, including their fav (knex), but these guys are focused! So proud :)
I hope you all enjoyed the places your stories took you.

Term 3, Week 1 and back into it! Our Big Book - William's Wet Week

We are Reading Detectives! Here is one of our reading strategies in our bag of tricks...
CLUE COLLECTING/INFO GATHERING

We have been learning the story starts here...right at the front cover.
The author and illustrator can use the cover of a book to begin to tell the story and set the scene. This is where the author reveals or hides as much as they want us to know to start with.

In A5 we say 3 things tell the story:
1. the pictures
2. the words and
3. our voices

We team the pictures and the words to help us understand a story so we can tell it through the tone and expression of our voice. We don't skim past the pictures, they are not just there for fun (although they are fun). When we see a picture we...

"Pause, notice, wonder and return to the story with more understanding."

We did this looking at the cover page of William's Wet Week.

From the Cover Page we predicted:
  • It would rain for a week
  • The main character would be William
  • That what William wanted or loved was to be dry and warm because he did not look happy about the rain.
  • The problem would be that something happens to stop William from staying warm and dry. The problem is always to do with what the main character(s) want or love in narratives. Maybe his umbrella would fly away.
  • The week might only be Monday - Friday (a working week) because William is wearing a suit and holding a briefcase. This made us think he is going to work.
  • William would not work on a farm or an outside job because of what he was wearing.

We brainstormed what William would need to stay dry if it was raining and dressed Micah up in it. We noticed William only had one of these items...perhaps he needs more?
